Herr Foods Inc., Nottingham, PA

Family businesses are not only the economic engine of our national economy but also provide enormous leadership and financial support to a multitude of community, charitable and religious institutions.

Charitable or philanthropic activities provide excellent opportunities to extend the legacy of your family business into the community and indeed around the world. However, developing a "contribution policy" that reflects family values and builds family unity can be challenging.

How does our family make strategic investments in our community that reflect our deepest values? Do we contribute as a family, as a business or a combination of the two? To whom or to what shall we give? Should our charitable goals be related to our business goals? What value do we place on family members taking on leadership positions in charitable organizations? How can involving family members in charitable giving provide them with great training in business strategic thinking and governance?

Resources will include the Herr Family; Phil Clemens, Chair/CEO, The Clemens Family Corporation; and Marlin Horst, President/CEO of Premier Custom-Built, Inc. and Jeanie Horst, Owner, Quilt Expressions.
